It was a big night out, my husband and I got a baby sitter and went up to Pamplemousse. It was disappointing on all fronts. Our server messed up our drinks order and then the appetizers. The food was good, but not great. I was looking forward to my dessert selection, a banana creme tart with chocolate ganache.... sadly, it also did not live up to its potential. Over all I would not go back the food was okay, the service poor, and the price far more than I thought it should be.

Pamplemousse has such a reputation in San Diego, I was excited to finally make it there for restaurant week, and even more excited that they had surf and turf (how fitting, next to where the surf meets the turf...). The server (to his defense, it was packed for restaurant week) messed up multiple orders, the meat was barely par for such a high-end establishment, and their wine was served too warm. The banana desert was mediocre as well. Positive notes to their braised beef ravioli (although the meat could have been cut up more to avoid me trying to manipulate the meat and the noodle on to the fork). Their Bourbon/Lemonade specialty drink was good, but nothing to make the trek over there for. A $350 bill for four during restaurant week for a C+ meal at best.

Based on a recommendation from a friend, I went to dinner at Pamplemousse. As usual, I sat at the bar (although the dining room was full anyway, so there wasn't a choice this time). It was that last day of track season in Del Mar, and I think they were a bit busier than normal. I started out with their arugula salad which was simple, but quite good. One interesting note was that there was an A capella quartet that was roaming around the restaurant singing to random patrons. Not really my thing, but they were quite good.

The main course was the mixed grill. The pork and filet were excellent and the lamb was OK. The truffle mashed potatoes which came as a side was quite good as well. Truffles are an ingredient that really required a light touch, but they were well used here. All in all, the service was OK...friendly, but I think they were a bit busy. It didn't feel like what one would expect based on the prices, but I'll give them a mulligan since it was a big track crown.

All and all, a good experience.
