Comic Con has been unleashed in San Diego, complete with an army of dresser-uppers and the accompanying lookie-loos. While walking through the chaos on opening night, a girl dressed in a skimpy cat-women (it may actually have been cat woman...I can't be sure) handed me a flier for breakfast. 20% off with a Comic Con badge, it boasted. Well, I don't have a badge, but I do like breakfast. A few short days later, I wound up at Taste & Thirst for an early morning delight.

As downtown restaurants go, it's fairly nondescript. The lunch menu is pretty vanilla, probably more appropriate for a suburban sports tavern. The breakfast menu was a bit more interesting. I went with the "Michael Benedict" (eggs benedict with sausage patties in place of the Canadian bacon). It was almost a great dish...the muffins were crisp and the sausage, while small, were fresh and tasted great. Unfortunately, my eggs were overdone (the most important part of any poached-egg based dish is runny yokes). Too bad. I will say, thought, that the breakfast potatoes were the best I've had in a while.

Since I was in a gluttonous mood, I also got a short stack of chocolate chip pancakes. They were OK, good portion, but I'm of the opinion that CCP needs to be served with powdered sugar and whipped cream as opposed to butter and syrup (I though that's what the menu said, but not what I received). To wash it down, I went with a spicy Bloody Mary (or two). These were good...not to thick and quite a bit of spice. A nice surprise since I've been in a Bloody Mary slump lately.

The one area where T&T stood out was the service. The whole vibe was super warm and service was attentive and personal. It was very easy to banter with the staff. I felt right at home the minute I sat down.

Restaurant turnover is huge, and to be honest, I'm a bit worried about T&T's ability to survive. Their menu lacks pizazz, which is fine, but when that's the case...it's got to be great. The food was good, but needs to get better. I'm rooting for them, and will be back to try their dinner.
Working...
