How many times do you have to walk by a place before finally going in to try it out. As far as Stout is concerned, I think I was going for the record. I live just a few short blocks from here and pass it by constantly. Today I took the plunge.
Stout is a divey-little Irish bar nestled on the outskirts of the Gaslamp quarter. It's somewhat bare-bones for downtown...actually sort of reminded me of many of the Lowell/Nashua/Salem bars from back east...completely non-pretentious and real. It was pretty slow on the day before the 4th of July, but that was fine with me. I was warmly greeted and offered a beer and menu. The fare is Irish-American comfort food. I went with a Boddingtons and a special of the day-2 sliders and a hot-dog (hey, it's Independence Day). They were both pretty good...well adorned with traditional vegetable-condiments (onions, tomatoes, pickles, lettuces, etc). The real stand out was the fries. Nice texture, but really well seasoned-no need for ketchup here.
This is a nice little sports bar that's light on flash, but gives a good warm experience. I definitely want to give this place a try when it's packed.
