Do you miss bell-bottoms? How about disco? Do you find yourself pining, again and again, for those wacky 70's? If you've answered yes to any of these questions, then have I got a place for you. Hob Nob Hill often comes up when searching "best breakfast in San Diego", and readily advertise their spot on Food Network's "Diners Drive-ins and Dives". Do they live up to all the hype...how could they? Anyway, since it's a short walk from my place, I had to give it a shot. I went in for breakfast and was blown away by the ambiance. Had I gone back in time? The dark dining is adorned with exposed rock, dark wood and glass chandeliers. Even the waitstaff's outfits are an anachronism...err, I mean a symbol of glorious days gone by. Shortly after sitting down, I ordered a corned beef omelet. One question quickly came to mind. Where's the corned beef. Very little meat was folded into the egg giving it little meat flavor. That said, the coffee cake that comes with is a little bit magical. Both crumbly and moist and topped with a white icing...this alone was worth the trip. I also went with a side of sausage patties. The looked great--really rustic and plump, but the flavor wasn't their and they were very dry. I have a feeling that if you get these on the right day, they'd really shine. Not today, though.
