If a restaurant in FoodFinder happens to pop up with a 10 rating, and it's in driving distance, I'm going to check it out. This is because often times, owners/managers will will rate all of their dishes 10. Not a bad strategy...it gets them onto the homepage. The most recent red-flag in San Diego was Cafe 2121 in University Heights. Let the debunking-mission commence.
Cafe 2121 has the feel of an upscale-but-homey coffee shop, but has a fairly extensive breakfast and lunch menu. I strolled in with breakfast in mind and ordered up a couple of dishes--the chocolate-chip pancakes and sausage/tomato/mozzarella scramble. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with the pancakes. They were light and fluffy, and weren't overpowered by chocolate like is the case with many interpretations of this dish. The portion was huge (6 medium sized pancakes) and had a great presentation. The egg dish wasn't quite as impressive as the pancakes.
Another beautiful presentation consisting of a large, marble slab containing an iron skillet with the egg mixture, toast, and potato pancakes. The flavors of the skillet didn't quite come together and was a bit under-seasoned. Still tasty, but after those pancakes, my standards were raised a bit.
Cafe 2121 is a nice little spot with huge portions and meticulous detail in their plates' presentations. The food is good and the parking is ample (a rarity in San Diego). The owner/host/server is super-friendly and customer focused. A great value that's worth a visit.
