I had high hopes for Taste of Thai as it had recently been recommended by a friend. Since one of my co-workers had downloaded at 20% coupon for the entire meal...today's lunch selection seemed like a no-brainer.

We decided to share a few appetizers and I went with the Pad Thai (one of my favorite dishes when prepared well). The calamari was pretty tasty, but the beef satae was mediocre at best. The Pad Thai was very bland (although, I forgot to ask for it spicy as I normally do)--my bad.

The service was pretty good. We were greeted quickly and the meal flowed at a good pace. My only issue was that I had asked for chop-sticks which were never brought. Oh well...at least I got to practice my fork skills.

I feel like ToT has more to offer than we got today. I'll probably give them another shot (but three strikes and you're out).

My cohorts and I had been talking about checking this place out for a while, finding a 20% off coupon on their website clinched a trip up to Del Mar today to try this out. The place has interesting seating; there are several custom benches winding throughout the dining area that are EXTREMELY comfortable. I could have easily stayed for a nap. Unfortunately (I was told) the chair on the opposite side of the table wasn’t nearly as comfy.

We started with fried calamari and Satae; both were decent, nothing spectacular. The soup was something I’d not had before; it had chunks of onion, tomato and potato in a clear broth, and it tasted more boring than it sounds. I ordered chicken Pad Thai for an entrée, and that was just a mess. I’m used to some spice in Thai food, this was bland (I wasn’t asked for a spice level, as I’m used to at most Thai places). Also, more disturbingly it had these little dehydrated shrimp in it, along with chunks of tofu. The shrimp were crunchy and the flavor was too pronounced, which is unfortunate for me since I don’t care for shrimp. I don’t think we’ll be headed back anytime soon.
