I've got to say, when my family suggested going to check out a new Italian restaurant in Salem, NH...I was a bit skeptical. Nothing against the city, but I just didn't expect to be "wow'd" in any way. The good news is, I'm a sucky predictor.

This stand-alone building in close proximity to the Rockingham Mall looked super shiny and new. The interior was super clean and the decor was classy and elegant. We were warmly greeted by the hostitutes and quickly brought to our table. This was nice as the place had a nice-sized crowd and we hadn't made reservations.

Our waitress was simply superb. She walked us through each of the four-or-so pages of the menu offering recommendations and obscure ordering protocols for each. Case in point - she advised us that many guests order 2 half orders of pasta as their main course. As a sucker for variety, that's exactly what I did.

To start out, I got the meatball appetizer. For me, when sizing up an Italian restaurant, I want to try a simple dish with their house red sauce. I really liked the meatballs (although both my mother and brother claimed they could do better); they were rich in flavor and had a rustic texture. I tried a few of the other appetizers, but wasn't as impressed (the risotto balls were fine but didn't quite live up to the hype).

For a main course, I got two of their pastas. One was the butternut squash filled pasta served in a brown-butter sage sauce, and for some contrast, I also got the spicy sausage orecchiette. Let me tell ya, those sage thingies were ultra rich but delicious. The tang of the sausage pasta was almost needed just cut through the weight of its counterpart. All of the pastas are made in house and you can really tell by the quality.

Ii really wish I could have tried the desserts but after the huge quantities of food thus-far...there was just no way.

I was really impressed with TK. Living in San Diego, we have a shortage of decent Italian food and it was nice to see what the experience can be like when it's done right.

Bravo, Tuscan Kitchen!
