As a Boston transplant, I find great pizza in San Diego hard to come by. I mean, don't get me wrong...pizza is the most perfect food and you can't really screw it up too much. That said, east coast pizza is just a little better than what I've found out here. Ask around and you'll find Bronx Pizza is thought to be the best in town. Tonight, I got a chance to test that statement.

BP is normally a by-the-slice spot, but we had some eating to so, so we ordered a whole pie...meatball and pepperoni to be precise. The style is thin crust, and they do a pretty good job. I was easily able to scarf down my half of the pie - my only recommendation would be to double down on the toppings. The sauce and crust were both great, though, an appropriate homage to east coast pie.

If you choose to eat there, you need to deal with walls smothered in NY memorabilia. A small price to pay for the quality of the pizza (and maybe a bonus of you're from NY). I'll be back for sure.

If you're interested in authentic East Coast (or New York) pizza, then you've got very few choices in San Diego. Bronx Pizza is at the top of that short list. Don't even think about eating at the restaurant itself, because there is quite a demand for the 10 or 12 seats in the closet of a dining room. But you can call ahead and stop by tom pick up some genuinely good pizza with a shot of genuine New York attitude. You'll be surprised at the quality of the pies, I guarantee that. In fact, you'll be so pleasantly surprised that you'll even welcome the surly attitude of the kitchen staff. It almost adds to the flavor!

Over the years, I've enjoyed any number of combinations of toppings on their standard cheese pizza. The crust is fluffy, but seared on the edges in typical brick-oven style. I've never had one that wasn't really good. It's a little more expensive than you'd expect for takeout, but it's worth it. The Washington Street location is accessible from 163, so Bronx can serve a fairly wide radius. They do offer delivery, though I've never taken them up on it. If you're a local in the Hillcrest area, then I'd suggest eating there weekly... or even daily. It's that good.
