Apparently, the trick is to go to the bar. It allows one to sidestep the ever-long lines one must endure to eat in the dining room. Wanting to try as much as I could, I got a chicken and pork-rib combo, and added a single beef rib. And what BBQ meal would be complete without sides...between the four of us, we split some beans, fries, and onion rings.
First of all...it was a ton of food; by the end, I was so full, I could barely move. As for the food itself, it was decent BBQ fare. For the meats on the plate, the pork ribs were the highlight, and I will say, the sauce was just a little bit magical. It had a strong vinegar presence that wakes up the taste buds without being too tart. The chicken was also good, but I wouldn't order the beef rib again.
The sides were also great, especially the thick-cut onion rings.
The experience as a whole is a bit non-traditional. We ordered our food at the bar, but had to walk up to a counter to pick up our food. Then, when an order of o-rings was omitted, the bartender took care of that. A little be chaotic, but the service was friendly and we never wanted for attention or refills on our drinks (BTW, the beer selection is marginal at best).
Phil's is a good spot. I have to say, I wouldn't wait too long in line (which is no reflection on the quality...I just don't like lines), so I guess I'll have to stick to off times. We went on a Wednesday night at about 8 and got in pretty easily.
