Cowboy Star is the first non-chain steakhouse in downtown San Diego that I can officially endorse. I went in on a cold-windy night because it came highly recommended the week before. To paint a picture...the walls are brick with stained wooden beams. There are cows-hyde chairs so sit in, and fireplaces to make you feel cozy. Cowboy hats adorn the walls in a subtle fashion. Let the howdown begin.

As usual, I got the night started with a Jack Daniels Manhattan on the rocks and was drawn to the crab cake appetizer. It was pretty good (bear in mind, I've had some pretty spectacular crab cakes lately...I'm looking at you Oceanaire). I liked the red-pepper puree as an accompaniment.

Although I was tantalized by many of the "Entree" items, I felt compelled to get a steak. As such, I went with the 14 oz Ribeye; that thing was delicious. Char-blackened on the outside but cooked to a perfect medium. It was so tender and juicy, no seasoning was needed. On the side came three delicious asparagus spears and a lump of mashed potatoes (apparently this changes). But I wasn't done there.

For dessert, I went with the cheesecake. A yummy-ass offering augmented by a toasted nut/oatey/caramel thing and served on a bed berry sauce. That thing went down like Mike Tyson at the hands of Buster Douglas oh-so many years back.

Service was friendly and spot-on. My bartender was Eddie (on his last night), but several of the staff were there drinking and having a great time. All were super friendly and made the customers feel right at home. I'll be back, and may make this a regular spot. Maybe you should to ;).
