I went in right around 5 last Sunday night. The interior has a cool vibe and elegant but casual decor. I went to the bar and ordered up a Manhattan to start the night. Dinner doesn't start until 6, which I found a bit strange, but I was able to start off with an order of the duck-fat fries. This dish is becoming more and popular these days, and this is probably the second best version that I've tried. The fries were a medium cut and had a near-perfect texture (crispy on the outside and light and airy on the inside). The duck flavor was there but quite subtle and the Parmesan added a nice touch.
When 6 rolled around, I ordered up a dinner. On the recommendation of the bartender, I went with the Pork Butt, and a couple of sides...Brussels Sprouts (which is one of my favorite vegetables) and the Corn with jalapeno and chorizo. Let's start with the pork, it was an absolute masterpiece. The texture was a spot on...ultra tender, but not sloppy, and the flavor was true to the meat, with the sauce and grilled peach serving as perfect accents. The sides...well, you win some, you lose some. The corn was a nice dish, but lacked the kick I was hoping for. The Brussels Sprouts, sadly, were a bit of a disappointment. Many of them were charred, which amplified the bitterness, and they were swimming in dressing. Not sure if that's what they were going for, but it wasn't really for me.
To finish up, I got the red velvet cake. Not at all what I expected based on others that I've had (for some reason, I think of Urban Solace when I think of this dessert). They essentially made a sandwich with 2 moist pieces of cake with a filling (and topping) of a cream-cheese filling. Pretty good stuff.
So, did Searsucker live up to my expectations? I don't know. But I look forward to going back and working my way through more of the menu. And you definitely get your money's worth (I spend about half of what I normally do at Oceanaire).
