Decent Italian food is not abundant in San Diego. I expect this list to be quite short.

I was the first customer of the day at TOAST, and was greeted very warmly; the staff really went above and beyond to roll out the welcome mat. Upon taking a seat at the bar, I was given a quick rundown of the wines, and was offered several recommendations. It was easy to tell that the bartender was both knowledgeable and passionate, so I just went with everything he told me to try. It was happy hour, so all of the appetizers were half off.
I started out with 2 appetizers...the oven-baked cauliflower in pomodoro (tomato) sauce and their fresh baked bread stuffed with cheese and tomatoes. The cauliflower was baked with a cheesy topping and served in a pool of tomato sauce. It was simple, elegant, and delicious. The bread was OK...but a very different style than any focaccia bread I've had before. Dipping it in the left over cauliflower sauce made for a tasty treat.
For an entree, I had their broccoli and sausage lasagna. If you get out to try TOAST, you've got to give this a go...it's a masterpiece. It's made in a white sauce with little strips of pasta; it actually seems more like a casserole than a lasagna to me, but who cares. The flavors balance perfectly to form a whole that's much better than the sum of the parts. To finish off the night, I had their lava cake. The menu warns to give 20 minutes, but mine seemed to arrive pretty quickly. I was advised to swap out the ice-cream flavors, and since the bartender hadn't gotten anything wrong yet, I wasn't about to argue now. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have any dessert wines by the glass, but that's OK.
They do have a strange wine service model. It's self serve with a few "stations" with bottles and little dispensers. Great for tasters as you can get single ounce pours. Personally, I'm old and set in my ways, so I just ordered a few glasses (the "super Tuscan" merlot was the best one that I tried that night).
I was really impressed with TOAST. The service was amazing, the staff was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and warm, the atmosphere was quirky and fun and the food was spectacular. I highly recommend this spot.
