It was a cold and rainy Wednesday night in San Diego (seriously, what's up with this shitty weather lately), and Greek and Persian cuisine were calling; Alborz answered that call.

The first thing that stood out upon entry was the vast, empty dining room. Not a great sign, but no reason to turn and run, either. The five of us arrived individually in 4 minute intervals and eventually, the party was complete. The waitress came over and asked us if we wanted anything to drink. "What do you have for beer?", I inquired. She opened with "Greek Beer" and then continued to rattle off four or five brands I wouldn't drink if you paid me. No problem...I'll take what's behind door number 2. In fact, we were all sucked in by the lure of the mysterious "Greek Beer". It was fine--light and crisp; I doubt I'd get it again. (sorry for the inappropriate build up...sorta bored right now).

Anyway, for dinner, I went with the Tadig. Essentially, it a heap of basmati rice that is fried until is has the texture of a balsa-wood model plane. No lie...it's crunchy (although a perfect golden brown). Top that with a stew made of pomegranate and walnuts and you've got yourself an appetizer that everybody will try, but won't be finished or taken home (in its defense, the portion was huge).

Next up, the main course. I got 2 beef skewers...one of filet mingon and the other of ground beef. Now we're onto something here. Both of these were expertly seasoned, but the ground beef one was magical. Hints of sweet and spice (would have been great on lamb) and moist as a...umm...moist thing (an apt simile escapes me right now).

All in all, a good meal with decent, but unspectacular, service. Their corkage was a bit steep ($15) for the establishment in my opinion, but oh well. Still a good meal.
